6,300 kilometers

The Yangtse (which means "long river") does its name justice. It is the longest river in Asia and the third longest in the world after the Amazon and the Nile. With a total length of 6,300 kilometers, 2,800 of which navigable, it flows through the Peoples Republic of China. Around 350 million people live in its enormous catchment area covering 2 million square kilometers. More than half of Chinas agricultural production and more than 40 % of the countrys industrial production are generated in this region. At its estuary, it discharges an annual average of around 35,000 cubic meters of water per second.
